Ecofix moves to the Willebroek trainstation

News

We can finally make it a bit more concrete: the former station building at the Stationsplein in Willebroek is getting a second life. We're transforming the station into modern offices, with respect for the building's character and history. Important to know: this blog is based on the architect's preliminary design: this is the chosen direction and layout vision, but not yet a final implementation or permit dossier.

Why this station suits Ecofix

We love moving forward, but not by tearing everything down. That's exactly why this project feels right: preserving a historic building while rethinking it smartly so that it works again for today and tomorrow. The design clearly focuses on preserving heritage value and making the building functional and comfortable for modern use.

Think of the well-known ticket hall and waiting rooms with their authentic finish: these elements remain an important part of the story.

From an imposing building to real office space

Those who've walked into the station know it has beautiful, high spaces... but not everywhere is equally usable surface area. The core of the preliminary design is therefore clear: creating more functional space without breaking the building apart. The architect starts with clear principles such as spatial optimization, logical circulation, integration of techniques, thermal improvement, and a contemporary interpretation of historic grandeur.

The smart intervention that makes a lot possible

One of the key interventions is a free-standing steel structure that allows for additional floor levels without heavily intervening in the existing construction. This results in multiple office layers, logically organized on top of each other, exactly what you need to make this building a fully-fledged workplace. Additionally, the plan includes a new central staircase as a logical connecting point between the floors.

How the station will be laid out

Level -1: supporting, but with life
The semi-sunken basement is designed in the preliminary plan as an active level with, among other things, a coffee corner/dining area, bar, informal workspaces, fitness/recreation, lockers, sanitary facilities, storage, and technical areas.

Ground floor: reception, experience, and flexible spaces
The large hall remains a head-turner and can function as a lobby/reception, informal workspace, or event space. In addition, there will be zones for meetings and private workspaces, and the former waiting room will be repurposed as a call center.

Upper levels: office floors and training
At the top, the plan provides multiple workspace levels. The attic floor will be activated as a training center/auditorium, which is important to us for bringing colleagues and partners along in how we work and grow.

Modern comfort, without being obvious

The preliminary design provides for integral accessibility with a lift linked to the central circulation. Techniques are smartly bundled so the building's character is not lost. Energy-wise, improvements are also considered (roof, floor, and solutions to improve performance while respecting heritage).

What you can expect from us

We understand that this building is alive in Willebroek. And honestly, we really appreciate that. This will not just be 'an office' but a place where activity returns, every day again.
