Frequently asked questions

Energy sharing: what is it, how does it work, and why is it becoming so popular?

Got solar panels producing more than you actually use? Or do you have a neighbour, family member or friend who could really use that extra power? Then energy sharing might be for you. Instead of pushing your surplus back to the grid for a limited compensation, you can now use it smarter within your own network. Better for your wallet — and of course better for the climate too.

💡 What exactly is energy sharing?

Energy sharing means you share your surplus self-generated energy (for example from solar panels) with someone else.
Instead of feeding it back to the grid for a small return, you share it directly with another digital meter. That person uses your surplus and pays a favourable price for it. Win-win.

How does it work?

You’ll need:

✔️ Solar panels (or another form of local production)
✔️ A digital meter
✔️ At least one other party (neighbour, family member, organisation…) with a digital meter too

Via your energy supplier and Fluvius, you indicate who you want to share your energy with. There are a few ways to do it:

👉 Between private individuals
Share electricity with family or friends — even if they don’t live at the same address.

👉 Within a building
For example in an apartment block: one installation for the building, divided across the residents.

👉 In an energy community
Multiple households, SMEs or organisations join forces and share energy locally.

🤔 Why is energy sharing interesting?

✔️ Get more out of your solar panels
Your surplus is simply worth more when you share it than when you inject it.

✔️ Save on the energy bill
The receiver often pays a lower price than through the traditional grid. And you don’t have to build up capacity for energy you don’t use yourself.

✔️ Sustainable and local
Production and consumption stay local. Less transport = fewer grid losses = better for the environment.

✔️ It connects people
Whether you share with your neighbours, your sister, or the snack bar around the corner — you’re helping build a smart local energy community.

🤩 Who is this for?

👉 Solar panel owners with regular surplus
👉 Families or buildings with multiple digital meters
👉 Friend groups, families or neighbours who want to save together
👉 Local organisations, co-housing projects or SMEs with shared energy ambitions

➡️ As long as everyone involved has a digital meter, you can start energy sharing.
💡 (You don’t have to be with the same supplier.)

🚫 What energy sharing is NOT

❌ It’s not selling back to the grid — you don’t get the same compensation as injection.
❌ It’s not a fixed supplier bonus — it’s a direct settlement between meters.
❌ You still need an energy supplier for the part you don’t cover with shared energy.
