From hour to quarter-hour: the quiet revolution on your electricity meter

Frequently asked questions

Why Your Energy Bill Will Never Be the Same Again

Imagine if the price of petrol changed not daily but every 15 minutes. A crazy thought? Yet, this has recently become the new reality for electricity in Belgium. Wholesale prices are now set every quarter-hour instead of hourly. This might seem like a technical detail, but it's one of the biggest shifts in the energy market in years. A change that, if you're savvy about it, can have a serious impact on your wallet and our energy network.

At Ecofix, we've anticipated this, and in this article, we'll explain everything you need to know.

What Exactly Has Changed?

Quite simply: until recently, there were 24 electricity prices per day in the wholesale market, one for each hour. Now, there are 96. A new, current price is determined every fifteen minutes.

This shift, led by the Belgian high-voltage grid operator Elia, is not a local experiment. It's a crucial step in modernizing the European energy network, intended to make the market more efficient and stable. But what was wrong with the hourly prices?

Why This Change Was Necessary

The main reason is the rise of renewable energy. Sun and wind are powerful yet unpredictable. Within an hour, a passing cloud can plummet the production of solar panels, or a gust of wind can have turbines spinning at full blast.

With hourly prices, a mismatch arises. An energy supplier, for example, purchased electricity for a whole hour based on an average prediction. But if the sun shone massively in the first quarter-hour (causing a surplus) and the wind dropped in the last quarter-hour (resulting in a deficit), expensive last-minute corrections had to be made on the grid. These costs, the so-called 'imbalance costs', were ultimately passed on to all consumers.

By billing the market by the quarter-hour, supply and demand can be aligned much more accurately. This leads to:

  1. Less waste and lower costs in the market.

  2. A more stable electricity grid that is better equipped to handle the fluctuations of green energy.

  3. A more accurate price signal reflecting the real value of electricity at every moment of the day.

The Golden Opportunity: What Does This Mean for You?

This is where it gets interesting for you. This new market reality opens the door to smart savings.

1. Maximum Savings with a Dynamic Contract If you have an electric vehicle, home battery, heat pump, or other smart device, this is a revolution. You can now direct your consumption to the absolute cheapest moments with pinpoint accuracy. And the differences are huge.

A Real-World Example: On the first day of quarter-hour pricing, we saw prices vary from €0.046/kWh at 5 PM to €0.341/kWh at 7 PM. That’s almost 7.5 times more expensive in just two hours! Those who charged their cars at 7 PM paid the top price, while the smart neighbor at 5 PM drove almost for free.

2. Benefit from Negative Prices At times of extreme surplus of green energy (lots of sun and wind, little demand), the price can turn negative. You get paid to consume electricity. Previously, the price had to be negative for six consecutive hours before producers of green energy lost their subsidies. The Flemish government is now considering linking this to negative quarter-hour prices. The result? Negative prices will occur more often and more selectively, providing even more opportunities to get paid for your consumption.

3. A Lower Bill for Everyone Even if you don't have a dynamic contract, you still benefit. As the entire market becomes more efficient and imbalance costs for suppliers fall, the overall cost structure decreases.

Ecofix: Your Guide to Tomorrow's Energy Market

A new reality calls for new tools, and that's where we make a difference. While most major suppliers still adhere to showing hourly rates, we are the very first in Belgium to give you full control.

In the Ecofix app and on our website, we display the 96 quarter-hour prices live. No averages, no estimates, just the raw, transparent data you need to make the smartest choices. We believe transparency leads to awareness, and awareness leads to savings.

Conclusion: The Time Has Come to Consume Smarter

The transition to quarter-hour pricing is more than a technical update; it's a fundamental shift that returns control over the energy bill to the consumer. It rewards smart behavior and prepares our collective energy network for a sustainable future.
